SLJ Week1 Activity7

 LI:to create an optical illusion.

For our 7th activity for the Summer Learning Journey we created an optical illusion. An optical illusion is something that tricks your eyes. In this illusion I created it is supposed to look like it's going in or like it's going out. We could use a device and google draw or google slides or paper/pencil/ruler. I thought this was fun because at first I didn't know what to come up with.

SLJ Week1 Activity5

LI: to create our own kowhaiwhai.

Today for our fifth summer learning journey activities we were tasked at creating a kowhaiwhai pattern on paper or digital. In my kowhaiwhai I tried to create something that had to do with family. The task at hand was really fun and I enjoyed it a lot, it was also really fun to see my partners designs, and I found  it really challenging.

SLJ Week1 Activity4

LI:to make a insect art using plant life.

The art is inspired by Raku Inoue

For the fourth activity for the first week we were tasked to make an insect out of plant life we find in our backyard. We could pick any insect we wanted to make. I chose to make a dragonfly. I used a long skinny leaf, two leaves, a fluffy flowers and two flower stems. At first I didn't know what insect to make but when I clicked on the link on the SLJ site. The first thing I saw was a insect that looked like a dragonfly and that is how I got my idea. I then started putting my art together, the first thing I did was split the two leaves to make the wing. Then I placed the long leaf to make the bottom of the dragonfly. Next I placed the fluffy flowers to make the body and the head. Lastly I placed down the stem of the flowers to finish my dragonfly.
I feel proud of my creation because it was fun to make and I got to discover the school backyard.

Do you like my dragonfly?

SLJ Week1 Activity3

LI:to get a greater understanding of the text.

For our third Summer Learning Journey activity LS2 worked with room 5 to create a comic strip of a video of what might they have been saying. There was a video and we had to create a comic of what they might of said in the video. We worked in our pairs and created this DLO. We then watched the video to compare our guess to the actual video.

SLJ Week 1 Activity 1

LI:To collect materials needed to successfully complete our weekly superpower building missions with Nano Girl.

This morning LS2 worked in groups with our Year 4 students to help them create their first Summer Learning Journey blog posts. PBS are still at school this week so finding some of the materials we needed for our treasure hunt was easy. Our challenge is going to be able to find all the materials we need at home now. I found this activity fun because it fun looking around my house for things I needed. I am looking forward to the next experiment with Nano Girl.

What do you think the next experiment is going to be?

Digital Board Game

LI: To create a digital board game for the juniors

Press on the image to play but before you play you have to make a copy.

This week we designed digital board games with a Christmas theme to play with the junior students. To play the game successfully they will need to read and follow the instructions, then use their counting skills to move around the board. Today we showed our Year 4 students how to make their own games. In my game I used the colours from the Christmas colour pallets. You have to catch the thief that stole the present from Santa. The thief placed some traps so you can't get him. To know more about the game read the sentence under the image. It was fun and interesting because I didn't know I could come up with a game the kids like and I was very happy to see the kids were having fun.

Operation Christmas Drop

LI: To write a summary of the story behind the Operation Christmas Drop in your own words.

For the last 68 years the men and women of the US airforce who are based at Andersen Airforce Base in Guam have been using a pilot training drill to drop much needed supplies to the people who live on the 60 remote islands that surround Guam. In my opinion I think the idea of Operation Christmas Drop is good because it brings the community together and makes people happy, it also leaves the negative thing in the past.

Designing the Christmas Tree

LI: To design and make a holiday decoration that fits the client brief.

We were making a holiday design for our school Christmas tree. I would say the strength of my product is My sewing is strong enough to hold the stuffing and the amount of cotton it can handle. While making my design I didn't change anything. After finishing my creation I was very proud of what I did and in my opinion I think it looks great. We hanged our holiday designs on our school Christmas tree, and took a photo with our friend group. I was really proud of my creation because I got express what I wanted to make.

Design technology, Evaluation

Illustrated Story

LI: To write a pourquoi (tell me why or how) story that follows the structure and paints a picture in the mind of the reader.

Our challenge this week was to create a porquoi story that we would illustrate and share with our junior classes. A porquoi story tells us why something is the way it is. Our story tells why/how… This morning we shared our stories with Room 2 and Room 4, and they loved listening to them.

I enjoyed making the animation because it was fun to create it and get create our own imagination.

Probibility tree

LI: to create a probability tree to explain your thinking.

Probability is the chance that something is most likely to happen. LS2 has been studying Probability for two weeks. Sulia and I have been working together on this DLO to explain how Probabilities work. In small groups, part of LS2 had a maths session with Mrs. Anderson talking about Probabilities. One of the maths problems that occured through our session can be seen in this DLO. We used Probability tree to solve these problems. Here are the results.

Step It Up

LI: to use TEEL paragraphs to explain our colour choice.

Art contain different types of elements for example colours and mixing. In my picture of roses I used bright colours that set you in a good mood. By mixing colours you can make a different colour or make the same colour but darker or brighter. There a different colour moods, for example dark corlours set you in a sad mood, like black, purple, green. bright colours set you in good mood. In art we use colours to expres our creativity. In my art I mainly used yellow which expressed my good mood while making it, the colours I used was dark yellow and bright yellow to express the happy day.

2020 Tech Reflection

 LI: to reflect on tech.

This years tech was confusing and fun. We had go on lock - down for a couple of months and we were still doing tech. This year was very rough but still was very fun doing tech. Going to tech we got to do Robotics, cooking and science. We were able to meet new teachers that helped us learn and experience new things we never knew or never done it before. I would like to thank the teachers Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Heka and Mrs Sharma for helping learn new things.

Tech Reflection

 LI: to learn about plants.

This week was the last week for science tech, and we learnt about plants. We first talked about the structure of the plant and how plants grow. We learnt about the parts in plants, for example the guard cell. We first wrote down in our books the 5 questions and what we know about food tech. Next we collected 10 leafs for our table and we had 2 minutes to collect them, we wrote down the length of the leaves, texture, the size, the colour and the pattern.

Research - Aretha Franklins song Respect

LI: to research Aretha Franklin's song Respect.

For this Respect Care Award challenge I chose to do the challenge Research Aretha Franklin's song Respect. I learnt that the song respect was released on the year 1967. The song was on her album I Never Loved the Way I Love You. The songs genre is R&B, Classic soul/soul.

PBS Collage

LI: to create a collage showcasing our life in PBS.

For care awards I created a Collage showing my life at PBS. I decided to work with Karlos for this task. This was a CARE award task/challenge. My favourite part about being at this school was that I made lots of friends that could help me when I'm not feeling %100.

Thank you Letter

LI: to write a thank you letter to a teacher or staff member.

This is a letter to Mrs Anderson because for helping with my education and the subjects I needed help with, maths, and writing. You helped me to become confident with myself while talking in front people. I learnt how to work together in a group with other people, and learnt how to ask for something when I needed it. I could explain myself when you asked me a question, because you helped me. You would do anything to us with our education and become successful. You would learn and teach us what you have learnt just to help us.

Art Colouring Book

LI: To experiment with colours

Own Creation - Roses by Ong

Original -  Roses by Vincent Van Gogh

This morning we tried one of this year’s Kick Start Summer Learning Journey activities. The purpose of this task was to experiment with colours by mixing colours from the original palette with pop colours. This allowd us to recolours famous painting or images of landmarks around the world.

My favourite part of this activity is getting to experimenting with the colours.

Exploring international current events

 LI: To identify author’s purpose.

These reasons are to persuade, inform or entertain (PIE). Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make decisions about which stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening around the world, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map. For the current events I collaborated  with Sakshi. I enjoyed getting more help from her about how to do places on maps and how it works , something I found interesting was being to actually work well with someone I don't  really work with and being to have the confidence to share my thinking and knowing how to do Current events on google maps.

Te Whanau Raukura Performance

Te Whanau Raukura, the Kapahaka group came to our school to explain the behind the things they were using. They used the taiaha, poi and te rakau to explain the meaning behind elements of the Maori culture.  Next Bekah came into LS2 to show us how to play Pukana. While they were performing I found interesting was that they used the poi to train their wrist because it help get ready to fight when they go to war. It was fun to learn something you didn't know, I thought the poi was just used in a dance. It was really fun learning about the Maori culture and at the end they performed the haka which I found scary.

Exploring our national current events

 LI: To identify author’s purpose.

These reasons are to persuade, inform or entertain (PIE). Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make decisions about which stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening in New Zealand, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map.For the current events i collaborated  with Karlos and Ong and i enjoyed getting more help from them about how to do places  on maps and how it works , something i found interesting was being to actually work well with people i don't  really work with and being to have the confidence to share my thinking and knowing how to do Current events on google maps .

Provocation: Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?

LI: To identify and consider the two perspectives of this provocation to help me form an opinion.

For reading we were learning about provocation, a provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Today we considered both sides of the provocation, ‘Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?’ We then used that information to help us form an opinion that we could justify with evidence. In activity this activity my opinion was, I think we should have our own choices of wearing a mask, because some people might not feel comfortable and for some people the might have breathing difficulty.
I enjoyed reading my groups opinions.

The Light brigade poem

LI: to know the story behind the poem.

This week we learnt about the poem called the Light Brigade. We had to unpack the poem bit by bit to understand the meaning behind the poem. The author of this poem is Alfred Lord Testiness. The story behind this poem is about the light brigade riding the valley of death and then trying to retrieve the guns that were stolen. They came back failing the mission, and coming out with nothing. 600 men went in less than one third came back ( less that 200). Something I enjoyed doing doing was learning about the Light Brigade, because I didn't know about it in the first place.

Maths Clhallenges

LI: to learn about mass and weight.

This week we were put into groups for Maths. In these groups we made up names that  represent maths or includes maths names, our name that we chose for our group was. The multiplying 7’s because we had seven people in our group and we were supposed to multiply our questions we were given. In the multiplying 7’s were Victoria our leader Giovannie, Makaili, Afa, Karlos  and Lily, we put all of our opinions together to come with different solutions to solve our challenges and we would have to ask questions if we didn't understand the question or ask for help because no one should have sat in silence because we are a team and we are all supposed participate so we all can have friendship even though we haven't worked together but we did make a big difference and we worked as a good team whether we liked  working together or not.

Something I found interesting was the amount of animals that weigh the same as an elephant, because we found six animals that weigh the same as an elephant altogether.

Why is it important to use our PBS CARE values?

LI: to use transitional vocab.

This week we have been revising explanation writing. Next week is our assessment week so we did this collaborative challenge to remind ourselves what is needed when we write explanations...
Something I really enjoyed learning about TEEL (Topic introduction, Explanation, Evidence, Linking).

Lowest Common Multiple

LI: to find the Lowest Common Multiple.

For maths this week we were learning about the LCM (Lowest, Common, Multiple). The lowest common multiple is when the 2 numbers have the same multiple, that is the lowest. For an example 8 and 6, we know that 8 x 3 and 6 x 4 equals 24 and nothing is lower than 24. To find the lowest common multiple, the easiest way to do so, is to multiply both numbers. If we were to find the lowest common multiple of 4 and 5. We multiply both numbers, which makes 20. There are no lower common multiples than 20. This is a strategy we all found out, from doing the first 3 questions.

Laws of Inertia

LI: To strengthen your understanding to forces, gravity and inertia

The above presentation is made by Sakshi, RJ, Sulia and me under the topic of Science. We first wrote our opinions and important points on a piece of paper and then started to complete our task. We also watched many videos and read articles to understand the topic on more detail. We didn't know much about Inertia so we found interesting that it has three laws which are rest, motion and direction. We also came to know that it was defined by Isaac Newton in the year of 1687. We learnt many interesting facts after completing this task and enjoyed to work as a group.

Why is it important to make wise choices?

Why is it important to make wise choices?

Do you think drugs are healthy for your body? Well you’re about to find out. There are many drugs including legal drugs and illegal drugs. Legal drugs are used for medical reasons, and illegal drugs are used for personal use that does not abide by the law.

There are drugs all around us, in our foods, medicines, .e.t.c. Some drugs are very unhealthy for your body therefore you could get sick, die or do something that would get yourself into trouble. For example, you might get high (in a state of consciousness) and think you’re a superhero and might think you can fly and jump off your house roof or a cliff, as a result you could get yourself injured or get yourself killed and this changes your action and how you act and this could affect your body. These are the drugs that are illegal.

Next is the legal drugs, like medicines and foods. Who knew there were drugs in our foods and drinks? In milo there is a drug called sugar, if you drink or eat too much Milo you could get really hyped therefore you could get yourself in danger. If you’re told to drink or eat a limit of medicines please do so because you don’t know what is going to happen to yourself.

Making wise choices is very important because it could affect your future making it better for your family and yourself. Making wise choices can lead you down a path where you misuse drugs or get yourself in trouble or hurt because of drugs. Using drugs, dealing drugs and planting drugs could get you into big trouble, for example life imprisonment, death sentence (Execution), .etc.

I was surprised how many people suffer from the addiction of drugs. It was also just shocking to see people look absolutely different from what they were before drugs to a short time skip later. I have seen that drugs can make a bad impact on some people's lives, it could cause them to lose their life, lose friendships/family, or even make them go into depression.

To wrap it up we have to make the right choices to have a good future and everybody's happy. We have to do things that are legal to get ourselves out of trouble, please do not do the illegal things, this is for your safety and mine. If you see someone do something bad and you think it is cool and you copy, the results are going to be bad. Do you think drugs are healthy for your body? Make a wise choice for your future.

LI: to simply write an explanation.

For writing we wrote an explanation, we could write any kind of explanation and I chose to write an explanation on drugs. My explanation explains, Why it is important to make wise choice an what it could help you with.

Inquiry

LI: To think deeply about a change I would make

If you were Prime Minister, what one thing would you do to change NZ for the better and why?

When I become a prime minister I would make sure everyone has a home and refugees feel like they are at home by, making sure our country and land clean, make sure they live in an area they like, for example I like people that are kind and clean so I would live like that.

Next I would like to change some rules, so that people can kind of do something they want to do.

I would do this because there are some homeless people that needs a home to live in, this could help other people to stop worrying about them. The refugees also need to feel at home because they came here to find a safe place to live.

Inquiry

LI: To decide which political party will get your vote by making an informed choice.

In this DLO we had to decide which political party I would vote for. I read a summary of the policies each party wants to introduce, should they win the election and the right to form a government to run NZ. Doing this allowed me to make an informed decision. If I was 18 I would vote for Labour because they have nearly done everything to help us while the virus was spreading, they took care of us with respect and we gave back respect. The leader of the Labour Party is the Prime Minister (Jacinda Ardern). She helped us get through the Covid-19 lockdown, and she handled it very well.
This means if Labour won the election in my electorate Shirin Brown would be our member of parliament and Jacinda Ardern would stay as the Prime Minister.

DARE to make a choice

LI: to make the right choices in life.

This week we worked in pairs to create a DLO about the “DARE to make a choice” program and were learning about how we are the most important people in the world and how to keep our body safe from drugs. In this DLO we are explaining why it is important to make wise choices in a drugs situation. We learnt about how drugs can affect us and the aftermath when you misuse drugs. In this DLO we were writing answers in paragraphs to the questions coming from the program.

Whakatauki

LI: to create a DLO that explains what it means and what lesson we can learn from it.

Whakatauki means proverbs, for this DLO we picked a proverb and explained the meaning and the lessons we can learn from it. The proverb we picked - There is no place like home - meaning no matter where you go there is nothing compared to home, the lesson is - home is the most comfortable place you will be.

Hitori (History)

LI: to Create a DLO that tells others about Maori language week.

For Maori language week Lukah and I created a DLO that explains others about Maori language. We explained what Maori language week is and why Te Reo Maori is important. Lukah and I thought Te Reo Maori is important to Aotearoa because it was the first native language in Aotearoa, and we can't afford to lose it. Maori language week from the 14th of September to the 21st of September to commemorate the Maori language or Te Reo Maori.

Te Reo Maori App

LI: to create an app to help others learn and practise speaking Te Reo Maori.

This  week is Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori week and we made DLO's about this week. For this DLO it's called the Te Reo Maori App, in this app we made it so people can learn Te reo Maori. We added Days and Months (Ra & Marama), Greetings (Mihimihi), Family (Whanau), Numbers (Tauanga) and a quiz. I liked making the quiz, and linking the links. In Maori language week I learnt how to say the days in Maori, the hardest day for me to say in Maori is Rahoroi (Saturday). I hope you enjoy the Quiz.

Family Tree

LI: to make a family tree.

For our Te Reo challenge this week we made a family tree of our families. For my family tree I asked my parents, so I can find out my family that I didn't know about. To make my family tree I started simple, I started with me and my brothers, then my parents, than their parents. After that I did my cousins, aunties and uncles. I learnt so many things about my family, while doing this activity.

It's Cool 2B Me

LI: to have confidence in yourself.

One of our task  for the DARE (drug awareness) program we made a DLO called It's Cool 2B Me. The DLO asks about the qualities we look in our friends, what you wish, the great values about ourselves, our best friends, our favourite foods, fun things I like doing, someone I would like to be and my goals. All of the questions in the DLO helped us have confidence in ourselves and how we are cool to be ourselves.

Biology

LI: To look for evidence in the data/an image and infer what might be happening

https://www.wevideo.com/view/1825414400

For Reading we were learning more about Science, this week our topic for Science was Biology. Biology is one of the 3 main branches of science. Biology is the study of living organisms. But this week we focused on what science is. Science is Empirical, which means science is based on observations. Coming off of that we started learning more vocab related to what Empirical meant. In the video we explained the meaning of the vocab we learnt, and explained the task we did.

Duffy books in schools

Today we received our Duffy books. The Duffy Books we get are given to us every term  by Duffy Books In School, we are given our Duffy Books to inspire a long love of reading any type of book. I would like to give a big thank you to Duffy Books in School for giving us our Duffy Books so that I can read at anytime I want. We were allowed to choose four books the first two are the ones that you want, and the other two books were just if we didn't get your first two choices.

MRS C GREN

LI: To understand the meaning behind the acronym MRSCGREN.

MRS C GREN is an acronym for the life processes. MRS C GREN stands for: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Cells, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion and Nutrition. These are all the things in something living. For example, plant and humans.
To create this DLO we used collaboration, skimming and scanning for key words to help us select and reject information needed to create our DLO. Before this activity I didn't know the acronym MRS C GREN and the things needed for something to live.

Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers

LI: To paint a still life of sunflowers in the style of Vincent Van Gogh

The above google draw showcases is a photo montage of my work. We first learned to draw what we see and use all the space as well as thinking about the tone and the shading needed. To understand it properly we then took a look at the different paintings made by Vincent Van Gogh to mark it as an example. We then practiced adding many layers of paints as it makes the painting look more effective. We also learnt about adding two or more colors in different proportions and making new colors which I think is very important. We then came to know about other rules required to make this painting which were, not overloading the brush with extra paint, dabbing, thing about the light direction and creating sharp edges and lines. I really enjoyed learning these new tricks and completing this beautiful painting.

Science equipment

LI: to learn about science equipment

For this task today we worked in our table groups to create an interactive slide show about the different uses and definitions about the science equipment the we learnt about at tech. In our group we added information about Bunsen burners, test tubes, funnels and etc.

Tech Reflection | Science / STEAM

LI: to identify what we know about science.

Today was the first week for science with Mrs.Sharma. We identifying what we know about science and the equipment scientists use. Science is where you discover new things and try to find a solution to something. The equipment a scientist uses are holder, test tubes, test tubes rack, Bunsen burner, gas tube, conical flask and measuring beaker. There are three science topic which are physics which includes force/motion/electronics/machines, next there is chemistry which includes mixture and chemicals and lastly, biology including living organisms. I'm looking to find out why is light fast.

Vincent Van Gogh

LI: to create a timeline to show the life of Vincent Van Gogh.

Our challenge was to create a timeline about Vincent Van Gogh. To create the timeline we used Padlet and worked collaboratively with the people around us. Vincent Van Gogh was an artist from the post impressionist movement meaning he likes painting still life, capturing the moment and time. I found interesting was about how he cut out a piece of his ear. I found it interesting because it was weird and kind of funny.

How to stay safe in an volcanic eruption

LI: to explain how to stay safe in a disaster.

This DLO is showing how to stay safe in an volcanic eruption. To stay safe, you have to follow the orders, if you're indoor close all doors and windows, when outside stay away from low areas and seek shelter, use a mask to avoid breathing dust, wear goggles to protect your eye and stay out of the area the volcano is in.

Natural Disaster Research | Volcanic eruption

LI: to define your natural disaster.

For this activity I picked a natural disaster and defined it using the questions on the DLO. The natural disaster I picked to research about volcanic eruptions. I learnt the latest volcanic eruption was 600 years ago in Rangitoto.

Maniakalani Survey

LI: to help juniors with a survey.

Our class LS2  helped some of the juniors from our school do the Maniakalani survey. The survey asked about how they learn in their classes and how they feel. I found helping the kids fun because i liked finding out what they feel in their classes.

Dance Class #1

LI: to use our body to dance.

This is the first week of dance class and our teacher is called Mrs Rebecca. The topic this week is called Me and my Body. We learnt that dancing is expressive, it includes movements, creativity and that there is freedom in dancing. We worked collaboratively to make shape formations to make these shapes when the music stops. I found this really fun for the first session. I liked making the letters with my friends.

Life Education

LI: to understand the four walls of Hauora.

For Life Education we were learning about how our brains work with Nicole. She told us  how to keep our four walls of Hauora stable. I learnt that we have 70,000 thoughts a day, I actually thought that we think about 700 or 500 times a day. We watched a video about Kapi and what he went through to help us  keep our walls stable. My favourite part of the Life Education was seeing Harold the giraffe because he was kind of funny.

Science Main Idea

LI: to find the most vital ideas from the information to help us answer the question “What is science?”.

This DLO is identifying the ideas of science which we have learnt from the information we have gained. To find the vital information, we negotiated by collaborating and communicating with our team. We shared our opinions and ideas, we took notes and from them we selected and rejected information to get to our final conclusion.
For us the 3 main vital ideas are:
Science is the discovery of What, Why, and How events happen
The three main branches of science are Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
There are two main categories of science, and they are Basic and Applied Science

Science Summary

LI: to summarise the information.

This DLO is highlighting our summary about what we know about science. In our groups, we have been sharing our ideas on posted notes and found the key words which we then wrote a summary about what science is. To then create a summary about the topic. We needed to skim and scan for key vocabulary to create this DLO. We also had to join our ideas together to create a more efficient idea.

We used our new question dice to help us construct some questions we want to find more about. The three questions we made using the dices were:

  1. When did science start?
  2. How will science progress in the future?
  3. Who was the first scientist?

Hauora / Inquiry

LI: to create an information poster that explains the four walls of Hauora.

Hauora is Maori health belief, the DLO shows the 4 Maori health beliefs. Hauora is like four walls holding up a Whare, if one wall falls down all of them falls down but your health walls fall down and you won't be healthy. The Whare needs four walls to hold up strong just like our health walls. These four walls help us stay in shape and healthy.

Making Connections To Problem Solving

LI: to explore problem solving.

We made an ancient puzzle called the tangram. Tha tangram is an ancient Chinese puzzle to cure boredom. We made this puzzle because the internet connection was lost. We use problem solving to find this activity. We use problem solving everyday and every time, it is used in sports and our school subjects. For this activity we listened and followed simple instruction to create the tangram. We started off the activity with a A4 paper and a pear of scissors . We had a square shaped paper and cut it a couple of triangles and a little square. Next we tried to make it back in the square we started off with, it was kind of tricky. Then we tried to make  some animals out of the shapes we had. The most difficult animal to make was a goat. I found this activity really fun and helpful.

Negative Numbers / Maths

LI: To add and subtract positive and negative numbers

We were learning about negative numbers. Negative number is number less than 0. When you add them you have to go up towards the 0. For eg: -2 -1 0 1 2.

5,7,10 / writing

LI: to use the 5,7,10 method to write creatively.

It was a nice day and the sun was about to go down. I was running out of time. I really wanted to go up that big mountain that I always see through the windows of my house across the bay and paint the sundown. My friend and I hopped on my boat and took off toward the huge mountain. It looked like it was small from a distance but it’s really big.

When we got there after 10 mins my friend and I got the mountain climbing equipment and the painting equipment and started climbing. We thought it was going to take days to climb the mountain but really it took 1 hr or 2. We stayed up for the whole night painting. We started mixing colours to get warm colours. We started off the painting with the warm colours as the background. We next drew the mountain under the sunset. The sun was starting to rise and we were running out of time.  We rushed to get all the details for the painting.

This is my narrative. Instead of using the 5,7,10 method we added some time to think and check our work.

Inquiry / Experimenting with ultra violet light

LI: to the most effective UV filter.

LS2 has been trialling the electronic sensor for the Kiwrious project. We are working with Suranga, Sonia, Even, Dawn and Yvonne from the AHL at Auckland University. I found that Kraft paper was the most effective way to keep Zally from the UV light. My DLO will show how I did this.

5,7,10 Writing / Lightning never strikes twice does it?

LI: to use the 5,7,10 method to write creatively.

Lightning never strikes twice does it?

That was the question that occupied their frightened minds as they crouched, huddling together, next to the pile of dusty sacks in the base of the windmill.

There were 4 siblings that had a secret place called the Windmill of Friendship. They went there every time they were feeling down, had some trouble with something or if they had something to say that was important. Well those 4 siblings' names are Zaw he’s 10, Lucky he’s 13, Kane he’s 11, Pon she’s 12 and they found this abandoned windmill.

One day they heard on the news that a storm was going to hit their hometown because the storm only comes once a year and people say that is the guardian of their town. Somehow this time the guardian seems to be mad. The 4 siblings thought that was weird so they decided to find out what happened. They then were about to go to the windmill but the lightning hit their house. The boys ran into the house for their parents, little did they know their parents were already out of the house, the boys were in danger but not for long. They got out before the house dropped to the ground.

Kiwi Sport

LI: to learn the skills of volleyball in a game situation.

This week we were learning how to spike and what to do in a game situation. A spike is an attack in volleyball and a way to finish a game. We learnt 4 skills which were dig, set, spike and serve. In a volleyball game you can only touch a ball 3x.

Goldfish in the bowl

LI: to make an illusion.

I made an illusion of to cardboard circles. First  I cut out 2 cardboard circle and drew a fish bowl on one of them and the fish in the other. Then you would stick the card board on each side. When you spin the pencil you might see the fish jumping into the bowl.

Food Technology

LI: to make pizza.

Today at Food tech we followed the recipe to make a beef and bbq pizza. I like the pizza and it was delicious. The hardest part was putting the pizza in our lu.ch boxes.

Matariki #4 Navigation by the stars

LI: to find out about the way the sun, moon and stars are used. Think about navigation and harvesting food.

Polynesian navigators used mother nature to find their destination. They find out the seasons by the crops and the stars. If the stars are bunched up that means it's time for winter.

Optical Illusion

LI: to explain what an optical illusion is.

Mr Johnston was teaching us about optical illusions. This optical illusion that you see on the DLO is an optical illusion. Can you find out which one is longer or shorter.

Matariki #3 What is Matariki

LI: Create a DLO that tells others what Matariki is and what the word Matariki means.

Matariki is is a Maori New Year which takes place in June and late May. This is a time where we all gather around and forget the bad things in the past.

Matariki #2 Matariki harvesting

LI: to find out what tools were used to harvest food.

When Matariki comes we gather around with family to eat and get ready for the next season that is coming. You will know when to harvest the food, when the Matariki stars are laid out properly thats when to harvest the food. When the stars are bunched together that's when to plant the crops. The tools they used to harvest the food was Ko, Timo and Kaheru.

Matariki #1 - Why is Matariki important

LI: to explain why Matariki was important to early Māori.

Chris, Lukah and I worked on this activity showing why Matariki is important. Matariki is a Maori tradition where they come together with family and friends to forget the bad things from the past. Matariki is a time of year where you get ready for the next season and remember the their ancestors.
