Geometree - Summer Learning Journey

LI: to draw a tree that is constructed out of triangles.

Todays Summer Learning Journey task is called the Geometree, for this task we needed to create a tree that was constructed by triangles. First we watched a video about the different types triangles, the first triangle was called Scalene, Isoceles and Equalateral, to find out about these types of triangles. (Click Here)

I first startes by drawing random lines and connecting them and made triangles. The triangles made the tree look geometric. Then I chose to colour in my tree with light colours.

My favourite part of this activity is getting to find a new way of drawing trees.

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about.

Character Profile

 LI:to create a character profile.

Our challenge was to choose our favourite anime/manga character. Our next challenge was to draw the character on our chromebooks or on paper. I chose to draw my character on… because...
Our final challenge was to write a paragraph that describes our character and explains why this character is your favourite

Manga Artist

LI: To read for meaning and understanding

Our challenge today was to use our smart searching skills to create a DLO in our own words that tells us about the life of our favourite manga artist or a well known manga artist.

Katsudo Shashin Animation

 LI: to create an animation.

One of the oldest surviving pieces of Japanese animation may be a nameless, dateless, approximately 3-second film known as “Katsudo Shashin“ (literally “Action Photo“). It simply features a boy writing the words 活動写真 katsudo shashin and then doffing his cap. Our challenge today was to use our animation skills to create our own 3 second ‘action photo’ using our own manga character.

The History Of Manga

LI: to read for meaning and understanding.

Our challenge today was to complete a reading comprehension about the history of Manga to show that we are reading for meaning and understanding. Our final challenge in this activity was to create a DLO to share the information we found out.

A fact I found interesting was how long Manga and Anime was going on for.

List Poem

LI: To write a list poem that describes a topic by painting a picture with your words.

Story Setting

LI: To write a cinquain poem that describes a character from your favourite online game

Haoura

LI: to show our understanding of Haoura in context

The olympic athletes are able to do this because their four walls are standing and they are able to control their emotions and the way they react to something negative. Athletes at the top of their field train mentally and physically because it is both the body and the mind that need to be strong to have balance as an athlete. It is important to enjoy and celebrate the success you earn but it is equally as important to embrace the less successful times. It is the learning you take from losing that makes you stronger and wiser. Having made an error you learn to remain calm in stressful situations. It is having a belief in yourself and the support of your whanau that keep you motivated.

We created a canva poster about the four walls of Haoura. The four walls are Taha Tinana,Taha Wairua, Taha Hinengaro and Taha Whanau.

Olympic Challenge #3

LI: to use the most efficient strategy to find the answers.

Today, we were looking at how we could solve another Olympic word problem. First, we gather the needed information. There are 250 squares in a badminton racket. With this piece of information we move to the next step and find out how many right angles in one square. Looking at a square, we see that there are 4 right angles per square. This means that the number problem is 250 x 4. When we multiply 250 four times, it gives us an answer of 1000. Therefore the answer to the question "How many right angles are on an entire badminton racket?"  is 1000.

Mindfulness Reflection #1

LI: To understand the meaning behind the pause breathe smile program.

This week we had our first session of the Pause Breathe Smile program. Our learning was based on having a calm mindset. We were introduced to this program by first defining what the word mindfulness is. Then we defined it and shared our different definitions with others.

After talking about mindfulness we were introduced to the red zone and the green zone. They are two different zones. The red zone is when you feel stressed, anxious, distracted and others. The green zone is when you feel calm, relaxed, peaceful, curious, clear, balanced, content and engaged.

We were balancing our mind set by forgiving bad things that happened in the past and calming our mind down and focusing on the present. To do this we sat in a circle and listened to the bell while breathing in and out, this helped us relax and focus on positive things.

I enjoyed this session because we learnt about having a positive mindset and about being mindful of others. During this session I learnt how to Pause, Breathe and Smile and calm my mind.

Poros of Malia Venn Diagram

L.I: To compare the past and present rules.

For this reading activity we were tasked to compare the olympics rules from the past and the present using a venn Diagram.
There was a big difference between the past olympic rules and the present. The rules that stayed the same was no shoving, no holding, no cutting of other racers.

This task was interesting because the task was about something that was going on now.

Poros of Malia

LI: to understand the main ideas behind the text.

This week for reading we read a text called Poros of Malia. This text was about a man named Poros who competed in the sprints in the ancient olympics. Poros had won this event in the olympics prior so he had to win or they would have been made fun of. After we finished the text we answered a list of questions, by answering these question we got a better understanding of the story because it helped us remember the details and the main idea of the text.

Flow Charts and Radio Chat

Olympic Math Challenges #2

LI: To fidn the most efficient strategy

This week for maths, our learning was based on the Olympics. Our first challenge was about Michael Phelps. This task was about Nastia Liukin. The question sayed The Olympic sport of gymnastics is judged with a point system. Nastia Liukin, an uneven bar champion scored a disappointing 16.725 in Bejing putting her in second place. Her opponent beat her by 0.001 of a point. The Bronze medal winner's score was a 14.975.What was the Gold medal winners score? By how much did Nastia score over the Bronze medalist? We had to find out how much of a point nastia opponent score was, and we also had to find out how much did Nastia score over the bronze medalist. I found this task intersting becase we learn new way of trying to solve different math equations.

Super Finger competition

LI: To recall our time tables quickly

Today for maths we have recalled our multiplication knowledge by playing a game called Super Fingers. This is a game to see how well and how fast you can answer questions, by using dice.

The instructions of this game is that we need to write a phrase on a white board or piece of paper. Then you will need to roll 2 dice which we will multiply by, and the first person to call out the answer will take one of the letters out. The first person to have all of the letters rubbed out will win the game

The process we did it in was similar to a netball game, draw, quarter finals, semi finals, and lastly finals. To run this competition smoothly we created a bracket which showed who will versus who. Our bracket was now even so later in the game we did a wild card who were Vayan and Micah.

In pairs we challenged each other to see who was faster at answering the questions. The winner would go against the winner from another person. Whoever wins goes up against another winner, and it will keep going until there are two people left, which would be the finals.

The two people facing each other in the finals were Afatia and Chris. I enjoyed this game very much becasue I got to learn my time tables faster.

Oral Language (Provacation)

LI: to Create a DLO that shows both points of view as well as your own.

We were tasked to make a DLO using provocation. A provocation is an action or speech that can show a powerful image in the reader’s mind.  For this task we picked an image from a site showing what it looks like after the olympics. We chose 5 to do the Bobsled venue in Sarajevo. The provocation was, Should host countries have to spend so much money on building Olympics venues?

In our opinion we think that they shouldn’t have spent that much money, because they could have used it again so that they didn’t need to waste so much money, and if they did that they could save money and they could help the poor people.

Culture

LI: to edit our writing using DRAFT.

Today, we focused on writing abstract noun senses poems. An abstract noun is an existing that cannot be touched or physical obtained such as, happiness, sadness, and anger. Metaphors compare two things without using the words 'like' or 'as'. The five human senses are sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.

For this task I worked with my partner  to create a poem using abstract nouns. Our group was given a list of abstract nouns that we can use to write a poem. The abstract noun we choose was culture. We used the five senses to describe what misery sounds, looks, tastes, and smells like while using metaphors to structure a poem correctly.

An abstract noun is a feeling or emotion that cannot be physically touched. A metaphor is the comparison between two things without using as or like.

For example: Happiness is a river of joy that is flowing through my heart.

The word happiness is the abstract noun and is used to create this metaphor.

I really enjoyed doing this because I got to work collaboratively and work together in a group and also use powerful words to strengthen the poem to make our poem

Coding in Python

LI: to learn how to code the micro bit in Python.

The first image shows the Python coding for flashing hearts. It flashes between a small heart icon and the regular. The main thing to notice between the python coding and the blocks is that the forever loop is at the top and the bottom of the content in both.

We then created a Python coding that uses buttons, the main thing to notice is the "def" which is defining what the on_button_pressed will make the microbit do. Again it has the top and bottom so the content can go inside it.

This task was fun because it actually felt like proffesional coding.

Thursday 1 July 2021

Vision Board

LI: to explain your goals using images.

We were tasked to create a vision boared. A vision board is explaing your goals with images. My goals are to always speak my language at or around people that are my culture. The other goal I'm trying to follow is to never break our religions rule, improve in basketball, reading and maths.

I enjoyed this activity because I could set goals for my future and now.

Greek Gods

LI: To use our smart searching skills to find information about the Greek gods

Link to Doc

Today David shared his reading challenge with us. It is all about the Greek gods and helps us to practise the skills we have been learning in our reading lessons with our teachers.

David created this task as part of his CARE award challenges. We earn CARE award badges in year 7 and 8 to show that we understand our school values. In this activity we used our smart searching skills to find information to help us complete the table.

I found this activity interesting and fun because we got to learn new facts about the greek gods and we go to learn new Gods

The Greek goddess I found most interesting was Hecate because Hecate is the daughter of the titans. She is mysterious and and crafty figure. She is the type of god to be feared.

Coding - Tech - Rock Paper Scissors

LI: to learn how to code the microbit to play rock paper scissors  and understand how a flowchart works.

This week for tech we were tasked to code our microbit to play rock paper scissors. The code for the microbit is in the DLO ubove. We then created a Flow chart on a google drawing to show how the game works.  To test if the LED worked we played a game together as a class.
1.When I shake, it will chose a random number between1 to 3.
2.I have to make a variable called and set this to the random nuber.
3.If the number is 1 - the microbit will show the symbol for Paper.
4.If the number is 2 - the microbit will show the symbol for Rock.
3.If the number is 3 - the microbit will show the symbol for Scissors.

I enjoyed this task because we got to learn what a flowchart is and how to code the microbit.

Sadness

LI: To write an abstract noun senses poem.

For our writing task this week we are working on poems and metaphors. Our metaphor poem was about sadness. A metaphor is describing something as something else without using “like” or “as.” an abstract noun is a noun describing an idea, for example see, taste, feel, smell and hear. We  worked on this task as a group. After coming up with our poem we create a DLO.

This task was fun because we learned how much creativity we have.

Te Reo Maori - Names

LI: to learn how to use write Maori words without Maori Dictionary.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cT3cu7JDRJWqGGNVtAbQrjtNZXFuhrKzMr0Va4GEOkE/edit

For this weeks Te Reo Maori challenge we were tasked to fill in the tables with english names. We then could'nt use the Maori Dictionary to figure out the Maori names and translate it.

Forming an Opinion

LI: To consider both perspectives

We were tasked to read the story about Lake Taupo to understand if the story was fact or story makes sense by saying if the story is true or fake. We wrote our opinion to see that why we picked which side to see if it was right or wrong. We wrote that taupo says according to legend which means it happened but actually is true.

I found this task fun because we got to find new information about Lake Taupo.

Main Ideas

LI: To identify the main ideas in the text.

First to start off the task we watched a video about how Maui slowed down the sun. After watching the video we wrote down the main ideas that happened in the video into this DLO. After finding the inportant Ideas from that we find the four very important ideas. One of the four very important ideas is that Using the flax for ropes slowed the sun. When you find the four very important ideas we found the three vital idean from the four very important ideas. I found this task fun because when you find main ideans from the text that means that you understand the text throughly.

Venn Diagram

LI: To find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and text of “The Beginning"

This week for reading we have been focusing on the differences of two types of ways a story can be said. This week we were finding differences and similarities from the video and text from "the Begining". This text was about our group finding things that are different and simaler bewtweeen the too. In the video verison it shows the seperation of mother earth and father sky, and in the written version it's explain the love for the two. I enjoyed this task because I got to see the differneces and similaritites bewtween two storys.

Taonga Summary

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about

For reading, we have been focusing on summarising text information such as stories, articles and other texts. The text we used for this reading task was the traditional Maori story of how the world came to be. We used the summarising DLO to help us write what we think happens in the in the story is true. First we needed to find 20 important words from the story, then we had to find the 6 most important words from the 20 important words. After doing that we used those six words to make a short story about the story. I found this task interesting because I got to summarise a story in fewer words, meaning I understand what they story is about.

Inclined Plane

LI: to read for meaning and understanding.

For inquiry we are working on simple machines. We created six DLO's about the six simple machines. This DLO is about a simple machine called the Inclined plane, an inclined plane is An inclined plane is one of the simplest machines. It’s also known as a ramp. A ramp helps your load move  easier to higher levels. We created our own drawing of what we see a pulley as.

This Labled Diagram was fun to work on because we got to learn what the inclined plane is used for.

Pulley Diagram

LI: to read for meaning and understanding.

For inquiry we are working on simple machines. We created six DLO's about the six simple machines. This DLO is about a simple machine called the pulley a pulley is a type of simple machine that helps lift an object with less effort used. If more pulleys are used the less effort is used. We created our own drawing of what we see a pulley as.

PB4L - Following Expectations

LI: To understand the expectations set for us as the role models of the school.

Our topic for PB4L this week was focused around the expectations and rules set for us, and we should know how to understand and carry them out because we are the role models of the school. As a class, we talked about the expectations of a wet day monitor, the common rules inside of the classroom and what is expected from the teachers.
Some students showed us an example of how we can show respect in other classrooms as well as our own. They roleplayed an example of what they should do if a class was acting up during a wet-day and including other students during a casual conversation. More topics that we talked about was the necessary noise volume in different situations.
I found this lesson interesting but easy to understand because I am familiar with respecting the classroom rules and following expectations to a high standard.

Maion Ideas - New New Zealanders

LI: to identify the main ideas in the text.

We were tasked to read a story called "New New Zealanders," it was about how a boy named Christian Kaka and his family seeked for a better life in New Zealand due to the war going on at Syria. After the story we were tasked to identify the main ideas in the text. For the Three Vital Ideas were Registered refugees can't be sent back to their country, The Refugees wanted people to know their story and many families moved to New Zealand because their country is to dangerous.

This activity was interesting because I found out what Syria is going through and that there are many problems outside of New Zealand.

Friday 4 June 2021

Samoan Language Week

 LI: to learn Samoan.

This week is Samoan Week, for samoan week I created a DLO on how to count in Samoan. In Samoan the numbers are:
Tasi
Lua
tolu
Fa
Lima
Ono
Fitu
Valu
Iva
Sefulu.  I found counting in Samoan difficult because it wasn't my culture, but I enjoyed learning the new word I learnt in Samoan. My favourite part of this activity was getting to learn new words and getting to know what it means.

Student Led Conference

LI: to share our learning with our friends.

On Thursday it was student led conference, student led conference is when we share our learning with our family. In Student Led Conference we had to show our work around the class room and show the work that has been put up on the wall. We then went on our computer and showed our work from 2021.

Celebrating Book-Week

LI: To celebrate the books we enjoy reading about - to celebrate reading.

This week was book - week, we could dress up as any character from a book. I chose to dress up as Naruto. Our school had an assembly, celebrating book - week. We also had a visit from Spiderman, he told us about his favourite book (Spiderman). This week for book week we have been doing different reading activities, my favourite reading activity was listening to the books Mrs Anderson and Mrs Fis'iahi read to us and creating a reading pathway about our favourite books from age 5 - to now.

Being A Jedi in Coding

LI: to code the to move backward without touching it - being a jedi.

In coding this week we were tasked to try make the mBot move backwards without touching it. My Robot will wait until I press the onbaord button before it does anything. While coding we are using these blocks to start the coding. To make the mBot we needed "If - Then - Else" block to give the mBot to choices of things to do. We used an ultrasonic sencsor which is on the front of it for it to sense if there was something 10cm away from the robot. If there is an object 10cm or less away from the robot the robot will move backwards. If there is an object further than 10cm away it will keep going forward. This is a pull into the forever block so that the robot constantly senses what is in front of it.

Student Voice Survey

LI: To find out the statistics

For this CARE Award we were tasked to create a student voice survey. For this student voice survey we decided to make the topic about the school lunches. We found out that nearly half of the class said the school lunches were alright and over 21/52 people said the lunches were alright, and over 22/52 people said the lunches were bad. A small amount of people said they were good, which were 5/52 people. I was suprised by how many poeple thought school lunches were alright. I found this activity fun because we got to out poeples opinions about the lunches the school provided.

Leading a School Assembly

LI: to lead a school Assembly.

On a Friday I was tasked to lead a school assembly. Before the assembly we needed to practice, when leading the school assembly we need to introduce the leaders (The Head Boy and Girl, Sport Leaders, Maniakalni leaders). Leading the school assembly for me was hard and I felt nervous. I found leading the school assembly fun because we could watch who took part in the singing and we could introduce the school leaders. My favourite part of leading the school assembly was to watch who took part in the singing and hearing how many people are singing.

Cinquain Poem

LI: To write a cinquain poem to describe a sports star

We have been learning to write cinquain poems to help us strengthen our connections to description. A cinquain poem has 5 lines. Each line has a different purpose. Line 1 is a noun which is a name. Line 2 has 2 adjectives taht describe the noun. Line 3 has 3 verbs that end in ‘ing’ and describe the actions. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun. Line 5 is a synonym which is a word with a similar meaning to the noun.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to use powerful words to describe my favourite sports star.

Reading Pathway

LI: To show my personal journey through books

This week is book week at Panmure Bridge School, which means every class participates in a number of reading activities. One of our activities was to create a reading pathway that shows how my favourite books have changed over time. At the moment I like reading the I survied books because I like reading about what they do to survive and the struggles they go through.

Technological practices

LI: To use technological practices process to design a toy.

For Mrs Fisi’iahi’s Inquiry lesson, we were focusing on the three last technological processes. They were: build, test and evaluate. We used the required materials in order to build the AUV rover. After this, we tested and compared each group’s rover to see which group was able to scramble across the floor the furthest. Evaluating our results was the last step.

I found this activity fun and exciting because we got to make our own design and see other peoples creativity go to work.`

Thursday 20 May 2021

Soccer

LI: to represent Panmure Bridge School in the football interschool.

This week we had football or soccer interschool. I was nervouse, every game was 15 mins. Our first game was against Ruapotaka and we lost, 1-0. We then went against Stonefeilds and we lost, 5-1. The next game didn't happen because the school did not come. Our 4th game was against Sylvia Park school and we drawed 2 all. The last was against our own school, Panmure Bridge and we lost 1-3.

It was fun getting to see how other schools play and getting to make new freinds. My favourite was against our own school because we got to play with our own friends.

ASB Get Wise

LI: to be wise with our money.

We got a visit from ASB who taught us how to be smart with money and make the right decisions with money. The phrase was Stop think and make a good decision... spend or save. To help us learn we played a game in teams, we had $1800 for a trip to Fiji. The factors of the game was: Passport - $200 Economy flight - $500 or first class - $800 Accomodation by the ocean $500 + $100  to cover all meals or budget hotel for $200 Travel insurance for $300 -Yes or No- when using the credit card it has to be paid back in full, we then had the activities which were $100, $200 or $300, and then something bad happened, we got food poisening. Luckly we got covered by insurence. This game helped us learn how to use money wisely.

I enjoyed this because we got to understand how other people in our group uses money.

A Moment in Time Poem

LI: To use the language features and structure of published poem to help use write our own poem.

Publish your group poem on your blog
We looked at the language features and structure of a poem called ‘A Moment in Time’ and used our experiences from camp to follow the structure and collaboratively create our own moment in time poem.
To describe what we heard, what we saw, how we felt and what we wondered we used our senses, adjectives and adverbs.
Ajectives are describing words.
Adverbs are a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective.

I found this interesting because I enjoyed working together with my group.

Settings

LI: To use powerful words to describe a setting so that it paints a clear picture in the mind of the reader

I thought it was a perfect day to take a walk along the concrete jungle, as I got closer to the park I felt very lonely and cold. It felt like I was isolated alone, it was depressing. I strolled along the friendless seats and I saw one particular seat, it looked very harsh. There was the lack of inspiration to sit on it. The lights and dead trees along the sides were stunning but it was scary, almost like the whole park was abandoned. I felt weak. I wondered if I could make it through calm and steady.

A setting is the place, time and environment of a story to help a reader make a connection to your narrative you need to use your words in away that helps them form a picture of what you are describing in their mind.
To do this we looked at an image and thought of 10 words that described and showed what we could see. Once we had thought of the adjectives or adverbs we used our smart searching skills to help us find synoymns that made our descriptions clearer.
I found this interesting I got to use my imagination use bigger words because I learnt new word and the meanings of the word.

Toys

LI: To strengthen connections to technology.

We have been learning about technological practice.  This week we have been learning about the 6 processes of Technological Design and how each one is important in the process of designing a product.
We are using the processes of technological practices to  design and build a rubber band- powered rover that can scramble across the floor.  I found this interesting because it was challengeing.

Cybersmart #8

LI: to learn how to make animations with Google presentation.

For this cybersmart challenge we were tasked to make an animation using google presentation. For this animation we created a boat and a dolphin going through waves.

Space Jam

LI: To find the most efficient strategy to answer the question.

We were tasked to solve a maths group problem and create a DLO.     Problem:    You are in charge of organising opening night of the movie. Use the information below to help you organise the theatre.
Each of the 3 theatres can seat 150 people. Kids are $12.50 and adults are $15. Kids must come with an adult.
Find one way to fill the theatres and say how much would be earned.
    Solution:
 75 x 12.50 = 937.50

75 x 15 =  1125

1125 + 937.50 = 2062.50

2062.50 x 3 = 6187.50

2062.50
-------------------
2062.50 x 3  = 6187.50

2062.50
2062.50

4125.50 + 2062.50 = 6187.50

Sir Issac Newton

LI: To use your smart searching skills to find out who Sir Isaac Newton was and how his work connects to simple machine.

This week for reading we were given a collaborative task to find out what Sir Isaac Newton had to do with simple machines. We found out Who he is and why his work is important to him. In our DLO we added one simple machine he created called the Pulley. A simple machine is a machine that makes our lives easier.

Something I found interesting about Sir Isaac Newton was that Sir Isaac Newton's mum wanted him to be a farmer but he refused to be a farmer. I found this interesting because I didn't know his mum wanted him to be a farmer.

My favourite part of this activity was being able to work collabrativly because I got to find out their opinions and ideas during this activity.

Brochure

LI: To a collaborative brochure that tells others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp.

Over the last week everyone challenged themselves during the sessions at archery, high ropes, kayaking, raft building, camp cooking, pancake race and team building/orienteering. Our group collaborated to create a brochure that shows others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp.

I enjoyed this activity because we get to advertise about the camp site we went to.
